Electrical guidance

What happens during an EICR?

What is inspected, why power may be interrupted and how the result is recorded.

Reviewed by Dominic Hopkins

The practical answer

An EICR is a structured inspection and test of the fixed electrical installation. It is not a quick visual check and does not cover portable appliances. The electrician agrees the extent and limitations, inspects the installation and tests circuits and protective measures. The report records observations and results. C1 indicates danger present, C2 potentially dangerous, FI means further investigation is needed without delay and C3 is an improvement recommendation.

This guidance is general and cannot replace inspection or testing of the actual installation. If there are signs of danger, isolate the affected circuit where safe and seek professional help.
